Woven

Woven, looks like a great fantasy book. Any plans to make this into a series?
Thank you! Yes, Woven has a sequel in the works, called Bound, and there may be a third book, but that’s uncertain. For right now, there are definitely two books in the series.

What do you think makes a great story?
Specifcally, for me, I have to connect with the characters and feel what they’re feeling, and that’s what I try to do for my readers with my stories.

What inspired you when writing Woven?
The poem “The Lady of Shalott” by Alfred Lord Tennyson is what Woven is based on, in addition to the many tales of King Arthur and Camelot.

What are your ambitions for your writing career? Full time? Part time?
Some day I would LOVE to be full time, for now I’m a part time writer, full time mom of four little kids.

When did you decide to become a writer?
In fourth grade. I read a book that made me cry for the first time and decided I wanted to make others feel emotion while reading something I wrote.

When writing Woven did anything stand out as particularly challenging?
Absolutely! One of the characters has multiple personalities, and it was really tricky to make them sound like different people and not confuse the reader. I had to do buckets of research on Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality Disorder). I’m something of an expert, now. ;)

How did you come up with the story of Woven?
My mom gave me a writing prompt – to listen to Loreena Mckennit’s rendition of Tennyson’s Poem (Lady of Shalott), and she has a gorgeous voice. I wrote a scene based on what I felt when I heard that song, and the whole book flowed from there.

What do you like to do when not writing?
I love to read, obviously, and I’m a mom, but when I’m not doing either of those I am a professional birth and postpartum doula. Basically, I coach women in childbirth. It’s a really taxing and fascinating career, and my experiences definitely make it into my books. I also love going on dates with my awesome husband and making healthy, yummy food.
