Motherpuppin Adorable (Author Interview)

Motherpuppin Adorable looks like a fun book.  What type of reader did you write the book for?

Simply put this book was written for those that already know life is better with a dog and those that want to read about how their life with their dog can be enriched even more in a light tongue and cheek way.

Any plans to turn it into a series?

I had initially not considered turning it into a series but that is a great idea!  Dogs are part of our everyday life and I hit about twenty-two ways that they have infiltrated our lives like dating, weddings, social media, and charitable giving in each of the twenty-two chapters. However, given our dogs prevalence in our daily life there are many more opportunities to write about in a complete collection.

What inspired you when writing Motherpuppin Adorable?

I was inspired by my dogs and how they have enriched my life and maybe other people’s lives as well.  As I was writing I reflected and dug deep for inspiration related to my life experiences with dogs along with those around me and their dogs.

I would otherwise have left much if that inspiration buried deep and the stories would be forgotten. It reminded me of having a child and as they move through life and experience things it often causes you to recall memories that you had not thought of in a long time.

My son recently was trying to train our new Great Pyrenees rescue how to stand up. I had to laugh at all the dogs we had and the crazy stuff we attempted to have them learn when we were kids and how they did learn (or somewhat) and the companionship and joy I had experienced from my dogs.  Those same thoughts inspired me throughout the writing process.

What will readers get out of your book?

I previously noticed that so much of the available books about dogs were either seriously funny dog cartoons or very serious “how to” books about obedience and such that I had bought many times but don’t really read past the second page.

There were not a lot of books that really celebrated our relationship with dogs in a fun and light way. In Motherpuppin' Adorable: what to do when your dog is better than everyone else's we help you debut your dog’s irresistible instincts of adorable and create a loyal fanbase that will adore your dog as much as you do.

So, if you are a reader that wants to increase your already enjoyable life with your dog and chuckle a bit about your devotion to your dog (aka Adorable) then this book is for you.

We talk about dating with dogs, incorporating your dog in your wedding, buying a car with a dog in mind and how to become instafamous and what happens when you do.

Dogs are fun, dogs make us smile and we hope we can help readers have a little more fun a little more of the time with their dogs.

How did you come up with the ideas in Motherpuppin Adorable?

I have always loved to write and draw on personal experiences. It just so happened that with dogs there were so many experiences to draw off that inevitably those experiences became the focus of information that is contained in the book.

I often think of one of my favorite quotes from W.R. Purche that we put in our book.  It says, “everyone thinks they have the best dog and none of them are wrong.” We all cannot help adoring our dogs with unfettered adoration and our title and content are homage to that devotion.

Did anything stick out as particularly challenging when writing Motherpuppin Adorable?

The challenging part was that as I wrote I also had a bit of nostalgia.  My dogs have been true partners and many that I wrote about or that provided inspiration are no longer alive.  One dog I wrote about in a short snippet and served as inspiration for others was my Great Dane Alice.  She was a formidable companion with many incredible quirks like her penchant for television and ability to turn on the remote.

Memories of her sitting on the couch enjoying a program were both nostalgic and brought a smile.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I am dog and horse crazy and can be found on our family ranch in San Benito County, California surrounded by both, a little dust and some chickens, kids, an extremely tolerant husband, and walnut trees too.
